The Newest iPhone Makes Life Interesting

Oh, dear iPhone, you certainly make life interesting!

A few months ago I purchased the newest iPhone 6s, and it has been an interesting experience! There are frequent system upgrades that I have to perform on it. If I don’t run the upgrades, it does not allow me to make and receive calls, or texts, and acts crazy in general. Even if I do run the upgrades, it still runs crazy. I try to blame it on solar flares, giving Apple the benefit of the doubt, but I’m not really sure if it is solar flares, or hackers, or if the phone haunted by evil spirits, or if it is simply poorly designed. I wish that Apple would send me a text when an upgrade is needed – sometimes I don’t know an upgrade is needed until I am far away from home, and in the middle of something, and need my phone to be working properly. When performing an upgrade, I can’t use my phone. Sometimes the updates only take ten or twenty minutes, but sometimes they take hours! It would be nice to be able to schedule an automatic time for updates to happen, like in the middle of the night, when I’m asleep. But no, I only find out when I’m trying to use my phone, and it is acting crazy! Very inconvenient!

Speaking of crazy behavior, one example is that many times, (several times a day!) when I have the phone resting on a nearby counter, or in the console of the car, I notice, out of the corner of my eye, that it has decided to initiate a phone call with the last telephone number that either called me, or that I had called! I usually notice it fast enough to disconnect the call before it goes through, but sometimes the call is to someone with caller ID, and they will call me back to ask me why I was calling them. When I explain what happened, sometimes I get the impression that they don’t believe me! I wonder if this happens to anyone else……

The dictation feature of the phone gets crazy sometimes, as well. In fact, many times, it stops working completely and I have to reboot the phone, or turn the dictation feature off, then on again. Sometimes that is an indication that it needs an upgrade. Many times the dictation feature does not understand what I am speaking, and types something completely different! For example, once I said “Facebook” and it typed “Face butt.” Yesterday, I was using it to dictate a text message to someone, telling them that I was just getting ready to go into the Giant Food store in Warrenton. This is what it actually typed:

Giant orange zombie
Giant orange zombie

I almost hit “send” before proof-reading it! I can only imagine what the reaction would have been from the person I was sending the text to! What I had actually said was “We are heading into the Giant Food Store in Warrenton.”

Never a dull moment with my iPhone, that is for sure!

Frustration with photos

About a year ago I got a new iPhone. (No, this is not a sponsored post, or endorsement of their product.) I had an old Blackberry Torch, and although I loved it, there just was not the modern types of apps available, or support available on the Blackberry Torch to meet my changing needs. I hated giving it up, but the charging port wasn’t working right anymore, and there just was no getting around it – I had to get a new phone. My friends were all encouraging me to get the newest iPhone. The reputation for great security convinced me to go with the iPhone instead of an Android. So far, it has been a challenge to learn how to use it, but I seem to be adapting. There is a learning curve, that is for sure!

My biggest frustration is with handling the photos & videos. There have been times when I wanted to email, or text, photos and videos that I had taken, but the file sizes were too large. I found this frustrating! A few times I managed to plug my iPhone into my desktop computer and move the photos to the hard drive of my desktop, which worked pretty well, most of the time. I liked freeing up the space on my phone!

Having said that, last night I realized that there were some photos that I had moved from my phone to my desktop that I would really like to have back on my phone – just for a day or two. I wanted to show the photos to someone that I was going to see today. Darned if I could copy those photos back to my phone! I tried everything I could think of doing, but nothing seemed to work. No, I have not tried contacting any support forum – I didn’t have time for that. So, the person that I wanted to see the photos ended up not getting to see them. Sigh…..

Mobile Payments and Banking Are Really Convenient

I just got a new iPhone 6 a couple of weeks ago! I resisted getting an iPhone for a very long time, as I loved my Blackberry Torch 9800 that I got several years ago. I loved the tactile, sliding keyboard, and I am uncomfortable with the keyboards that are part of the screen. I don’t want to use a stylus, and my fingers are clumsy when I try to type the keys I often hit the wrong keys!

But I have to admit that I am enjoying the convenience of the Wells Fargo app that lets me deposit checks online. I’ve also started to use the Wal-Mart Savings Catcher app with my iPhone – that is really convenient! I’m starting to learn more about Mobile Payments and Banking, and have learned a great deal from this infographic that I found on the website by Ohio University Online. I thought that maybe if I put it here on my blog, I could reference it easily in the future, and maybe someone else might read it and learn something too!

Which adhesive to use?

Top of shirt
Top of shirt

Recently I ordered a pretty shirt online from Amazon. The bodice of the shirt is covered with embellishments consisting of small shiny discs that I would guess are plastic. When I took the shirt out of the plastic bag it arrived in, many of the little discs fell off of the shirt. Some stayed in the bag, some came out of the bag and dropped all over the floor. Where the little discs used to be on the shirt, are little round dots of the adhesive that failed to hold the discs on. (Photo above of the shirt.)

I complained to the merchant at Amazon, and they are going to send me a replacement (if they can find one that doesn’t shed the embellishments) or a refund. So I expect that will be resolved. However, I am tempted to try to re-glue those little discs to the shirt. My question to you, folks, is, what would you suggest I use to remove the bad dots of glue from the shirt, and what EXACT brand and name of adhesive would you use to try to re-attach these little guys? I have no experience in this, but I’m thinking Arlene’s Fabric Fusion. I’d love to hear your thoughts on this, if you have had good luck with an adhesive product in a situation like this!

More scam phone calls

voice mail (free clip art)
voice mail (free clip art)

Today I was listening to voice mails left on our home phone number and heard a phone message from a man with a thick accent claiming to be “Officer Charlie” from the IRS telling me that he was issuing an arrest warrant on me for tax fraud. He left the phone number of 571-526-0007 for me to call back immediately if I want to avoid arrest.

I’m not sure how many days ago he called. I know this is another phone scam, not unlike the one I wrote about in an earlier post about a guy claiming to be from Microsoft, wanting access to my computers. (By the way

I have read lots of notices on news websites about this popular scam lately, a caller pretending to be from the IRS and demanding immediate payment of large sums of money or be arrested. I’m glad that I didn’t answer the telephone when he called – it might have gotten unpleasant with me telling him that I know he is a scammer, and then listen to him cussing me out!

In some ways I am amused that people think that we are innocent and gullible enough to fall for these scams. In other ways I am saddened by the knowledge that there probably ARE trusting souls out there that will, and do, fall for these evil tricks.
